Intermediate Slicing Made Easy with Cura | 3D Printing Software

Cura OctoEverywhere

What is Cura?

Cura is beginner to intermediate slicing software that simplifies learning settings. It is also user-friendly and allows you to upload G-code files over the cloud, onto an SD card, or directly through an upload cable to your printer. Cura also allows for both preselect printer profiles and self-made ones!

Where can I download Cura?

Cura can be downloaded for free on the UltiMaker Cura website.

What can Cura do?

Cura can slice your 3d models, repair minor mistakes, and control your printer. It also allows you to test new settings without completely screwing yourself over, thanks to its undo function. It also allows you to make custom profiles for different printers.

What makes Cura different from other slicers?

Cura allows you to share setting profiles with different printers, regardless of the model. This slicer also allows you to share printer profiles (settings for a printer) with other printers regardless of size, speed, and make. Cura also allows for filament customization by allowing you to set certain settings for each filament and create particular profiles to fit your specific filament style.

What makes Cura an intermediate slicer?

Cura allows you to access the start/stop G-code of a printer through the settings panel. What makes it different is that it is fully commented, allowing you to take baby steps into editing the G-code of a printer. It also allows you to stop a print at a specific time or layer to do things like change filament colors or unclog your unreliable hotend (I hope your hotend works better than mine). Cura can also display the elements that make up a CAD model and help you diagnose CAD issues.

Why should I use Cura?

If you want to transition to the intermediate world of 3D printing, this slicer is for you. It also allows you to build knowledge before moving on to a more advanced slicer like Prusa or Orca. Cura allows you to set setting visibility and not overwhelm yourself too quickly. On the other hand, Cura’s settings allow for large tweaking, either bettering your printers or making them more interesting.

How often does Cura update?

Over the last few years, Cura has seen major updates, including advanced g-code editing, more experimental print settings such as individual part printing, and further refined model and slicer error detections. Cura is a wonderful intermediate to advanced tool that can skyrocket your knowledge of the software side of 3D printing.
