Our goal at OctoEverywhere is to build tools and services that make 3D printing smarter and more effortless for makers around the world. Today we are thrilled to announce our latest adventure down that path, Gadget.
Gadget is your new 3D printing best friend. Gadget uses state-of-the-art artificial intelligence algorithms to continuously monitor your 3D prints and take real-time action when something isn’t looking great. At launch, Gadget will just be watching for common print failures, like spaghetti. But over time Gadget will learn to detect many common printing failures.
Gadget is really excited to meet you, but is still learning at the moment. We need to spend more time working with Gadget to help him learn and iron out all of the bugs in his programming, but we need your help!
We will be inviting a select few users to get early access to Gadget in the coming weeks. We will be looking for members of our community who are willing to test and send feedback to Gadget as he learns. If that sounds like you, request beta access today!
When Gadget launches, Gadget will be free for all OctoEverywhere users. We are excited to see what a future with Gadget brings for our community. 3D printing has never been smarter or simpler with OctoEverywhere!
We are proud to announce our latest feature: Intelligent Server Selection!
With Intelligent Server Selection, we have seen OctoPrint portal speed and latency improvements up to 70% for some of our community. Our telemetry tells us that average users will see a 10-30% portal speed increase, but around 23% of our community will see a 70%+ speed increase!
OctoEverywhere is built on top of a cutting-edge global mesh network of servers. We try to get as many servers in as many regions as we can, so our entire community experiences amazing latency and performance when using their OctoPrint portals. Up until now, we have relied on traditional internet routing systems to get users to the server that’s closest to them. These systems are fine for basic internet requests, but when the latency is key, they are lackluster.
We developed an advanced real-time latency measuring system that’s automatically run by the plugin periodically to find the absolute best connection for your exact location. Using the information gathered by the latency testing, our plugin is then able to connect to the most ideal set of servers, delivering you the fastest possible OctoPrint portal experience.
Sounds amazing right? We agree! This feature is live now in the latest version of our OctoPrint plugin, so simply update to try it out!
We build OctoEverywhere to empower the entire maker community, no matter where they live. Like always, if you have any feedback, issues, or questions, please reach out to us directly using our support system.
It’s been a little while since our last update… but we have been hard at work! Today I’m extremely pleased to announce the launch of three new features for our instant printer notification platform!
SMS Printer Notifications
Desktop & Mobile Printer Notifications
New Notification Type – “User Interaction Required”
A Quick Notification Overview
For those of you who don’t know, OctoEverywhere has a powerful and instantaneous notification engine that’s able to send you critical print information when you need it. You can get notified about many different things, like: print progress, print completion, print failed, first layer completed, filament change required, printer error, and more. All of these notifications are available to our entire community, for free, with no extra setup.
Our next-gen notification platform allows everyone in our community to customize exactly which notification types they want and where they want them. We support notifications via Email, SMS, Windows, Mac, Mobile Devices, Telegram, Discord, Slack, Pushover, and PushBullet. Each notification type is handcrafted for the endpoint with rich print information, large high-res images, and quick access links to your printer.
When OctoEverywhere’s notification platform launched we were really pleased to include SMS notifications. However, after a short period of time, we realized it would cost our community-supported service too much to provide SMS notifications with the system we had set up, so we had to disable them.
Fast forward to today and SMS notifications are back! We have been brainstorming new ways to implement SMS notifications so they are more affordable for the service, and we found one. We are so happy that after a few weeks of testing the system is performing flawlessly and it’s ready for our entire community to enjoy!
This feature we have been working on for a while, so I’m extreamly happy to get it in the hands of our community! With our new Desktop and Mobile Notifications, our community can enjoy instant and rich notifications directly on their Windows, Mac, and Android phones – with no app required!
We are leveraging the latest browser technology to deliver these notifications, which makes notifications appear directly in your operating systems notification center, just like any normal app. We put a lot of time and work into the message formatting, to ensure the notifications are dense with useful information and include beautiful high-res real-time screenshots.
For Android users, you can get instant and beautiful notifications direclty to your phone just like a normal Android app would provide. It’s really cool!
For Windows or Mac users, you can use any modern web browser to set up notifications directly to your operating systems notification action center. It’s magical.
Unforentally we can’t support iOS devices at the moment due to Apple not implementing the web technologies required. But there are rumors that these notification technologies might be included in iOS 16, and if they are, we will support them!
Finally, I’m happy to announce that we have added a new notification type based on popular feedback from the community. The “User Interaction Required” notification type can be enabled for any notification platform and will inform you when your printer needs your help. What printer events trigger the notification depends on your printer hardware, but usually these fire if the hot end crashes, the printer has an error, or the printer needs the user to manually confirm an issue with the physical hardware.
As we conclude every post, we once again want to thank the amazing community of makers for your support and making OctoEverywhere what it is today. The goal of OctoEverywhere is to empower makers around the world with free remote access to OctoPrint. New features for our notification platform make that promise even more real with new and better ways to manage and print amazing things.
Like always, if you encounter any issues or have any feedback, you can contact me directly by opening a support ticket. I love to hear our community’s feedback, so please reach out!
We are blazing through our star map of building the world’s largest and fastest network of next-generation mesh services to provide our community ridiculously fast OctoPrint portal and app speeds.
Today we are proud to announce Slipstream, a new core technology that moves us even closer to our goal of ludicrous OctoPrint portal speeds. From real-world telemetry, we have observed Slipstream allows your OctoPrint portal to load 2.2-3.1x times faster than it previously did. In some cases, your portal will load faster on OctoEverywhere than if connected directly to OctoPrint on your home network!
How is that possible? Is it magic? Nope. It’s a lot of hard work, help from our fantastic community, amazing engineering, and obsession over building fast and reliable systems. Our new Slipstream technology is a concert of components running in the OctoPrint portal, our OctoPrint plugin, and our worldwide network of servers. With all of these components seamlessly working together, OctoEverywhere can efficiently cache, optimize, and deliver the unique aspects of your OctoPrint portal in a completely secure and record-breaking way.
We are proud to provide Slipstream as a free service for our entire community. Slipstream becomes another amazing free service offered by OctoEveyrwhere, alongside real-time print notifications, print live streaming, full-frame rate webcam streaming, and so much more.
You gotta see it to believe it! Try Slipstream right now by simply updating your OctoEverywhere plugin to the latest version. Of course, OctoPrint will also automatically prompt you to update your plugin within a few hours when it detects the update has been released.
If you haven’t joined our amazing community yet, you’re missing out! You can set up OctoEverywhere on your OctoPrint server in less than 20 seconds completely for free, why not try it now!
Finally, we are saddened and horrified by the unlawful invasion of Ukraine. We don’t wield very much power to support those affected, but as a small gesture, we will be suspending payments on Supporter Perks for anyone in Ukraine during the next few months while keeping their Supporter Perks active. For current supporters, nothing needs to be done this will be applied automatically. For anyone else who’s affected and not an active supporter, please reach out to our support team.
This is a huge milestone for our community and something we have been aspiring to for a long time. We consider this a testiment to our amazing community of over 45k makers who use OctoEverywhere to empower themselves to make amazing things.
We hear your warm and wonderful feedback clearly. We are also excited to announce that OctoEverywhere has achieved a rating of 4.9 out of 5.0 stars on Trustpilot, which is more than we could have dreamed and humbles the OctoEverywhere team.
Our OctoEverywhere team is at a loss for words about how to describe how honored and proud we are of these accomplishments. The entire team lives and breathes this amazing service and constantly strives to improve and stabilize it. We thank you all for the support you have given us over our short lifetime and are looking forward to what’s to come next! 🥰
Security is the #1 priority for OctoEverywhere. We constantly strive to improve our service to make sure your printer and account only are accessible to you.
Today we are excited to announce email account access verification! This new system applies to all accounts and is enabled by default. It protects your account by only allowing logins from trusted locations. If you try to log in to your account from an untrusted location, you will get an email with a two-factor access code you must add to the login. The new location will then be trusted for up to 6 months and thus will allow logins with no account access verification needed.
Note that the trusted location technology only applies to account login and other actions that are security-sensitive. If you are already logged in on a device and move elsewhere, you will not need to verify access with the trusted location system.
OctoEverywhere has supported app-based two-factor authentication for a long time now, which is the best way to lock down your account. The issue is app-based two-factor requires the user to enable it and most users don’t. Since our new email account access verification system applies to all accounts and is always enabled, it protects our entire community from the start.
Ever start printing a model you’re excited about and want to share it with your friends?
Yeah, us too. That’s why we created Live Links!
Live Links allow everyone to share a free and secure public stream of their prints with friends, family, or the entire world! Live Links are packed with features, like webcam streaming, live printer information, and model links. Live Links also use a rich social sharing technology that puts your print snapshot and information front and center.
Live Links support adding your social accounts to the bottom of every link you generate to let viewers know where to find you! It’s a great way to share your work and allow users to follow you if they like what they see.
We are very excited about the launch of Live Links and hope the community has enjoyed them as much as we do. This is just the beginning for Link Links, over time they will become even more powerful, stay tuned!
We had an absolute blast celebrating our first birthday with our community! Behind all of the birthday celebrations we have been hard at work making OctoEverywhere even better and we have some updates to share!
Faster OctoPrint Portal Loads and App Startup Times
Thanks to the fantastic mind behind OctoApp for Android, we looked into and implemented message compression for our WebSockets! Our printer to server protocol already leverages advanced compression to keep message sizes small and zippy, but now the connection from your browser to our servers will as well!
If you have no idea what that means don’t fear, the result is we are seeing the OctoPrint portal load 10-15% faster and some apps load 5-15% faster on the first launch! You don’t have to do anything to enable it, it’s already working for you right now!
Webcam Plugin Streaming Optimisations
We made an update to our OctoPrint plugin that optimized the webcam stream startup speed and playback smoothness. This change will affect lower-powered devices the most, but it should bring a good performance boost to almost all of our community. To benefit from this work, simply make sure you’re using the latest OctoEverywhere plugin!
IPV6 Enabled Worldwide
We constantly strive to ensure our service is accessible to makers all over the world. One big step towards that goal involved rolling out IPV6 across all of our services. IPV6 is the next-generation internet protocol that allows for better and faster communication between devices on the internet.
What this means for our community is that more of you can connect to our service with smoother and faster connections! In the past, if your internet provider only supported IPV6, the connection to our IPV4 address would need to be proxied and translated by an ISP-controlled server. But now that OctoEverywhere supports IPV6 so your connections will come directly to our servers!
Happy Holidays ☃️
We have a lot more great features being cooked up in our kitchen that we are excited to tell you about soon!
Buy until then, have a great holiday season and happy printing!
OctoEverywhere’s Shared Connections are an extremely powerful tool that can enable remote access to any system that integrates OctoPrint functionally.
Shared Connections work by generating a unique and secure OctoEverywhere URL that will give access to your printer. You can use that unique URL to give your friends remote access to your printer, or you can use it in any application or system where you would normally use an OctoPrint local IP address or local hostname.
One example is the OctoPrint plugin for Cura! The amazing plugin allows Cura to work directly with OctoPrint to send your sliced gcode right to OctoPrint and start printing! You can easily set up the plugin to work from anywhere using Shared Connections!
There’s a lot to love about OctoEverywhere – being able to access your 3d printer no matter where you are, for free, is pretty sweet. But sometimes it’s nice to zone out and forget about things for a while, without having to worry you might miss something…
Our Instant Printer Notifications technology easiest way to keep tabs on your printer and prints – for free! We support notifications where ever you are; get instant notifications via Email, SMS, Telegram, Discord DMs, Slack, Pushover, or Pushbullet! We support 10 printer events and counting; including printing complete, print failed, print progress, first layer complete, filament or color change required, and more!
We meticulously crafted the notification format for every notification platform to make look and feel amazing, including full-resolution snapshots on most platforms!
Wow! How Do I Try!?!
Simple! If you already have OctoEverywhere setup, head over to the Notification Hub to enable whichever notification endpoints you wish. Then pick exactly which notifications events you want to receive.
If you don’t have OctoEverywhere setup on your OctoPrint based 3D printer, check out our Getting Started Guide for a quick and easy 2-minute setup!
… a huge shout out to the amazing community we are building and all of the OctoEverywhere project supporters. We had a handful of our community members volunteer to take part in an invite-only beta of this system and together we were able to make some critical improvements to the system. Without all of you, this project would be nothing. ♥
